![]() “Her love for music is insatiable and she practices religiously for three hours every day. ![]() Her mother has said her daughter is passionate about playing. Close your eyes and listen to her playing and her musicality is very evident. The first one who comes to mind is Yehudi Menuhin, who had all of the above in spades, but of course there were others.Īnwen Deng is a true prodigy. Throughout history only a limited number of true prodigies have appeared. A true prodigy has 1) extraordinary natural physical abilities that allows them to reach a high level of technical proficiency 2) great innate musicality 3) an innate love for, and attraction to, music, and usually to a particular instrument. So to call these unfortunate children prodigies strikes me as a misnomer. 4) They persevere because unfortunately that’s all they know, but can’t get anywhere as musicians because they are not musicians. ![]() 3) They reach a certain age and rebel when they become aware that they hate what they’re doing, and resent the fact that they were forced to do it. 1) Because they have no innate musicality their playing is robotic. But there are prodigies and there are prodigies, and all prodigies are not created equal. Prodigies abound, even more so in recent years. When I accidentally came across it my first thought was “not yet another prodigy.” That was until I watched it. I got to thinking about this after watching this video, which I have posted elsewhere.
